Mount Zugspitze Tour From Munich

How about Germany? Fantasy castles, Oktoberfest, and huge mountains? Sure enough! Germany has some Highland scenery that would surprise you, lured mostly by the Zugspitze-the very jewel among God’s lofty creations. At 2962 meters, it is the highest point in Germany and offers incredible panoramic views over the Bavarian Alps and beyond.

Essentially if you are in Brussels up in Munich, you have to go to the Zugspitze. This is actually leaving the city for a day just to immerse yourself in nature for what is indeed, one of the highlights of Bavarian scenery. Here is how you can enjoy fully that adventure of a lifetime just around the corner:

Getting There

The journey itself is an adventure to the Zugspitze! Here are the most common ways to get to the mountain from Munich

Train: This is the main attraction. Direct from Munchen Hauptbahnhof (central station) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. About 1-1/2 to 2 hours and very frequent runs before heading over to the cogwheel train or cable car that will take you to Zugspitze.

Car: Just drive to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. On average, a car ride to that town takes 1.5 hours depending on traffic. But there is limited parking most of the time, especially at the peak season so plan to arrive very early.

Bus: Several coach companies run one day trips to Zugspitze from Munich, including the ride to the mountain. If you want to forget the worries of driving to and from the mountain or of catching public transport then this might be a pretty good option for you. Selecting Your Ascent

Once in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you can choose:

Cog Wheel: Takes you through a scenic route with beautiful landscapes and tunnels for final access to the Zugspitzplatt- a high plateau offering amazing views- to finally ascend to the summit using a cable car.

Cable Car: More straightforward is taking the cable car directly into Eibsee, under this beautiful lake resting at the foot of the Zugspitze, and heading straight to the summit. As you climb, it promises great views.

Combination: Most probably, a lot of guests, opting to have the best of both worlds, will take the cogwheel train up and down by-the-way, or the other way around.

Highlights of Activities at the Top

The Zugspitze Summit is a true fairy tale land with plenty to see and do:

Marvelous Pirouetting Views: The main highlight, of course, would be glorious 360° views. On a very clear day, you might see Austria, Switzerland, and Italy! Do remember to absorb it all and take some glorious photographs.

Summit Cross: The gilded, classic summit cross must not be missed. An icon of the mountain, it has been the site for several photo opportunities.

Restaurants and Cafes: Several restaurants and cafes on the summit offer tasty Bavarian food and drinks. Enjoy a lunch or coffee while admiring the magnificent scenery.

Hiking: An adventurous spirit can be treated to hiking trails around the summit. There are trails for all abilities, from easy strolls to more arduous treks.

Skiing: The Zugspitze is a favorite ski spot in the winter. Skiing down with fabulous views is an experience like no other!

Trip Tips

Check the weather: The weather here can sometimes be on the rough side. If the forecast is good, go and dress accordingly! Layers are always recommended because even in summer, it can be freezing at the top!

Book your tickets in advance: It’s especially advisable to book the train or cable car tickets ahead of time for visiting in peak season, just to skip the long queue.

Get there early: The sooner one goes there, the more time he can spend, and the fewer guests there will be in the way.

Do not forget: Wear sunscreen and bring your sunglasses; they work up high as well as on cloudy days, even if the sun feels not hot at all.

Comfortable footwear is a must-have: You will walk a lot, how about a pair of comfy walking shoes?

Take it slow: Do not make any haste during your visit. Ensure to keep ample time to enjoy the breathtaking view, check the summit out, and savor the atmosphere.
